Headmaster charged with molesting students

Statesman News Service
DURGAPUR, Aug 9: A headmaster at a primary school in a Katwa village in
Burdwan was arrested today on charges of molesting several school girls a
day after a headmaster in an adjoining district was arrested on charges of
sexual abuse.

Mr Motiar Rehman, headmaster at Bonkapashi village primary school in
Mongalkote police station area in Katwa was dragged to his office as he
arrived at the school today and locked in for six hours by class III and IV
girls and their guardians.

Mr Amit Chatterjee, the OC of Mongalkote, was assaulted by the villagers and
refused entry to the school when he tried to rescue the accused teacher. The
situation was only brought under control when an additional contingent from
Katwa police station reached the school with senior school council officials
and arrested the headmaster late this afternoon.

A group of girls allege that each day Mr Rehman would call a class-IV girl
to a vacant room and molest them.

The first allegation was made by Barnali Ghosh, a class IV student who had
initially complained to her mother of serious chest pain last night but
later claimed she had been molested by the headmaster.

Not long afterwards the guardians of several other girls in classes IV and
III - Payel Mondal, Chanda Patra, Shanti Mondal - brought similar charges
against Mr Rehman.

Mr Gopal Pal, a school inspector from Burdwan brought to the school by the
school council members, said: "We have received complaints against the
teacher and the charges brought against him are grave. We shall hold an
independent inquiry and take whatever steps are necessary to bring back the
confidence of the guardians."

Barnali's mother, Mrs Manabi Ghosh, claimed around 12 young girls had been
molested by Mr Rehman.
